Deep learning, a type of machine learning, involves the use of multilayered neural networks to model and understand highly complex patterns in data.
Deep learning algorithms are integrated into the SOPHiA DDM™ Platform. For instance, our GIINGER™ algorithm uses a convolutional neural network to classify the genomic instability status of samples from low-pass whole genome sequencing data, while SOPHiA DDM™ for Radiomics leverages more than 50 million neurons to segment 3D medical images from CT, MRI, and PET scans.

Machine learning (ML) is an AI technique for fitting models to data, resulting in the development of algorithms and statistical models that can analyze large amounts of data, identify patterns, and make predictions, with improved performance over time.
For example, SOPHiA DDM™ for Genomics uses supervised learning and insights from nearly 2 million genomic profiles to pre-classify variant pathogenicity. Furthermore, SOPHiA DDM™ for Multimodal uses supervised learning to develop ML models for tasks such as predicting kidney cancer recurrence.

Pattern recognition focuses on the identification and classification of patterns in data. It involves the development of algorithms and techniques to recognize patterns and regularities in input data, which can be in various forms such as images or text.
As an example, SOPHiA DDM™ for Genomics utilizes pattern recognition as part of the PEPPER™ algorithm to call SNVs and Indels in NGS data. Furthermore, SOPHiA DDM™ for Radiomics leverages pattern recognition for extracting useful radiomic features from segmented images.

Statistical inference is the process of using data analysis and statistics to draw conclusions from data that are subject to randomness. It involves making predictions or decisions about a specific population based on a sample of data drawn from that population.
Many of our SOPHiA DDM™ for Genomics algorithms use statistical inference for tasks such as CNV detection (MUSKAT™), microsatellite instability (MUSTARD™), fusion and exon skipping detection (CARDAMOM™), and star allele calling (STAR ANISE).
